Empty legs are no new concept, vigilant frequent flyers have been taking advantage of them for years whilst making huge savings versus conventionally chartered private flights. The issue with Empty Legs has always been the availability and opportunity to compare all available Empty Legs for a particular route, date & location.
The purpose of FlyLux is to bring Empty Legs to the masses and provide consumers a singular platform to easily & speedily assess the empty leg market.
What Are Empty Legs?
The concept of flying for 75% less of the standard cost of a private charter sounds too good to be true, but this is what you can expect from an empty leg flight.
Quite simply, an empty leg is a privately chartered aircraft that is due to fly without any passengers. Typically, this comes about following a one-way chartered flight, where the aircraft then needs to reposition to pick up its next set of customers or return to its base airport. For example, person A charters a 4- seater plane from London to Milan on January 15th. Person B independently then makes a booking from Paris to Geneva for January the 16th which uses that same aircraft. The aircraft will therefore have to reposition from Milan to Paris ready for the booking for person B on the 16th. Paris to Milan on January 16th can therefore be sold as an empty leg.
So why the huge discount? The savings made via an empty leg come about as a result of (in theory) less flexibility and convenience for you the customer, as these aircraft has a predetermined route, arrival destination & have less flexible departure time. However, if you are able to keep on top of the empty leg market & the available flights, there is nothing to stop you taking advantage of these otherwise empty flying aircraft & saving a small fortune per flight.

The issue with Empty Legs has always been the availability & opportunity to compare all available Empty Legs for a particular route, date & location. To keep track of the full market of Empty Legs in the past has been a full-time job in itself, which is why up until now many frequent flyers have not often considered reviewing Empty Leg options on a regular basis.

An Environmental Shift in Private Aviation
The environmental impact of air travel cannot be overlooked. It’s a conversation of hot topic & the private aviation sector has a significant role to play in how humanity is going to protect our planet.
New reports suggest that UK private jet travel alone contributes approximately 1 million tonnes of CO2 to the atmosphere per year, that’s the equivalent contribution that 450,000 cars make over the same time frame. To put that into context, approximate passenger for passenger comparisons suggest that a private jet can emit as much as 20 times more emissions per passenger per mile than a typical commercial airliner.
Albeit approximate figures, these are worrying statistics for the sustainability of private aviation. The various carbon offsetting initiatives & charities alike that have arisen in recent years are a positive step, but the plane technology, fuel/ energy type & the way in which planes are chartered, have largely remained constant for decades. Exact figures are hard to define but it has been estimated that as much as 40% of chartered planes will then reposition empty. Filling an Empty Leg not only provides an opportunity for huge financial savings per individual but it also gives each consumer of private aviation the opportunity to make a conscious effort to leading towards a environmental conscious movement that will benefit private aviation & all it’s client in the long term.
Side text: A word of warning for those unconcerned by their carbon footprint. The idea that private planes can continue to fly empty for years to come seems highly likely. With almost all other sectors taking action, introducing carbo-zero type inicatives & adapting to new energy sources, implications for private jet consumers first-hand before long.
