Tom – the co-founder of FlyLux, worked in professional sport & would fly on chartered planes regularly with the athletes he worked with. Over time it occurred to Tom that almost every time he landed after a flight, the plane and it’s crew would be off again that same day, with only the crew of the plane onboard & no new customers. Over time it became clear to Tom that the collective environmental impact of one singular flight he travelled on would be profound. Albeit he loved the experience & convenience of private air travel, he couldn’t help but feel guilty that because the planes he flew on would arrive & fly on after empty seemingly every time he flew, the flight he & his team would charter would effectively contribute to in excess of two-fold the carbon emissions.
